Disney World Monorail Resorts Compared: Contemporary vs. Polynesian vs. Grand Floridian

October 13, 2026 · 6 min read

The three monorail resorts — the Contemporary, the Polynesian Village, and the Grand Floridian — are Walt Disney World’s classic Magic Kingdom hotels. They’re all Deluxe resorts on the resort monorail loop around the Seven Seas Lagoon, but they feel very different. Here’s how to choose.

How the monorail works for these resorts

The resort monorail loop stops at the Transportation and Ticket Center, the Polynesian, the Grand Floridian, Magic Kingdom, and the Contemporary. To reach EPCOT, you ride to the Transportation and Ticket Center and switch to the EPCOT monorail. For Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, you take Disney buses.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The iconic A-frame with the monorail running straight through its concourse. It’s the closest monorail resort to Magic Kingdom — you can walk there in a few minutes — and many rooms look out at the park or Bay Lake. California Grill on the top floor has great fireworks views, and Chef Mickey’s is a favorite character meal.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

A South Pacific escape with white-sand beaches and some of the best fireworks views on property across the lagoon. ’Ohana, Dole Whip at Pineapple Lanai, and Trader Sam’s give it a fun, relaxed vibe. It’s a short walk from the Transportation and Ticket Center, which makes the trip to EPCOT easier than from the other two.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Disney’s flagship resort, inspired by Victorian-era Florida beach hotels. It has the most upscale dining (including Victoria & Albert’s), a full-service spa, and a walking path to Magic Kingdom. It’s usually the most expensive of the three, and it’s the pick for honeymoons and milestone trips.

The villa options

Each monorail resort also has Disney Vacation Club villas you can book for cash: Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary, the Villas at the Grand Floridian, and the Polynesian Villas & Bungalows — including over-water bungalows with private plunge pools. Villas add kitchens and more space, which helps on longer stays.

Which monorail resort should you book?

  • Walk to Magic Kingdom and a modern feel: the Contemporary or Bay Lake Tower.
  • Tropical atmosphere, fireworks views, and easier EPCOT trips: the Polynesian.
  • Elegance and a special-occasion stay: the Grand Floridian.
  • More space and a kitchen: any of the three villa options.

Monorail resorts are among the first to sell out, especially around holidays. Compare all three for your dates, and set an alert if your favorite is full — rooms open up when other guests change their plans.
